ST. PAUL, Minn., June 26, 2025 (VSNewsNetwork.com) — Financial services company Securian Financial has announced the promotion of John Heshelman to Vice President and Chief Investment Officer (CIO).

Heshelman will report to Suzette Huovinen, Senior Vice President for Institutional Retirement Solutions and President of Securian Asset Management, the company’s asset management subsidiary. In his new role, Heshelman will oversee investment strategy and policies for portfolios managed by Securian Asset Management, including the company’s general account and separate accounts that hold the invested assets of policyholders’ variable life insurance and annuity contracts.
He will also provide investment and portfolio insights to company leadership, including Securian Financial’s board of directors.

Heshelman joined the company in 2021 as Head of Private Credit, where he managed and expanded a multibillion-dollar portfolio for Securian’s general account and third-party clients. He previously served as a senior portfolio manager at the State of Wisconsin Investment Board and spent 15 years at PPM America, holding roles including Senior Managing Director of Private Placements.
Heshelman holds both a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a master’s degree in accountancy from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is also a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA).
